The Arch Photography

HDR blend, f6.3, iso 50

Getting there

The Arch is a natural sandstone arch about a 10-minute drive from Port Campbell in South Western Victoria. Once you arrive at the car park you will take a short walk to the 2 viewing platforms.

Best times for photography

The rising sun comes up behind the arch so a morning shot is best. The lower platform offers a better view. In my opinion, both views are 5/10 at best. I drove here one early summer morning hoping to capture the sun rising through the arch, only to be disappointed that the viewing platforms are too high for decent photography compositions. Normally I would traverse the surrounding landscape in order to capture the best composition, but in this case, the risks of death via slipping into the ocean 50 ft below are very high.

*Bonus tip. Don’t waste your time with this one, try Loch Ard Gorge at sunset or the surrounding cliffs instead.

Stevensons Falls

Stevensons Falls
Stevensons Falls

Getting there

Stevenson’s Falls is about a 30-minute walk from the Stevensons Falls campground in South Western Victoria. There’s a car park and drop toilets upon arrival. There are plenty of camping spots for overnight stays, but it can get busy. The walk to the falls is easy but there is a bridge that is prone to flooding so check with the Parks Victoria website for closure notices before you go.

* Bonus tip. There is a meadow with Californian Redwood trees along the walk, this would photograph well in misty moody conditions.

Best times for photography

The falls face the South East they work best with evening light behind them, otherwise, you will have to crop out the overexposed and uninteresting evening sky. These falls can be packed with tourists in the evening too so get there early enough to secure your tripod location.

*Bonus tip. Go about 4 days after strong rains so the falls are full of water.

Hopetoun Falls Photography

A composite blend of a fast frame for the moving leaves and slow frame for the moving water.

Getting there

Hopetoun Falls is about a 20-minute drive from the very small town of Beech Forest in South Western Victoria. The drive takes you down into the Otway National Park along some logging roads (beware of fast driving logging trucks). From there you will need to walk for about 10 minutes down a steep staircase of about 200 steps. The walk is quite steep and narrow in places and a reasonable level of fitness is advised.

Bonus tip, fill up your car with fuel before you enter the Otways as fuel stations are few and far between. This forest is not the place you want to be stuck in with no transport.

Best times for photography

The falls face the west but they are in a steep gorge with plenty of tree cover behind the crest of the falls. For this reason, they will photograph well morning or evening. The image in this post was taken at 8 pm in January.

The falls can be packed with tourists in the evening too so a morning trip before dawn with a head torch is advised.

Mackenzie Falls Photography

Purple Rain (Mackenzie Falls) f5.0, iso 50, 1.6 sec, panorama stitch

Getting there

Mackenzie Falls is about a 45 minute drive from Halls Gap in Western Victoria. There’s a car park and toilets upon arrival. From there you will need to walk for about 20 minutes down a paved trail that includes 260 steps. The walk is quite steep and narrow in places and a reasonable level of fitness is advised.

Best times for photography

Because the falls face the west they work best with morning light behind them, otherwise, you will have to crop out the overexposed and uninteresting evening sky. These falls can be packed with tourists in the evening too so a morning trip before dawn with a head torch is advised.
