Marysville Photography

Getting there

The town of Marysville is a 1 hour 45 minute drive from Melbourne.

It’s an easy relaxing drive, taking in the black spur, the Yarra Valley and more.

Best times for photography

The best season for photography is Autumn and winter. The reason is there are lines of symmetrical Poplar trees just outside of town on the Marysville Buxton road. These trees look great in Autumn with all the golden colors. If you are fortunate to have fog in the morning then the trees will look even better. Another great angle to capture is from above the trees after sunrise because they cast long shadows across the ground.

Stevenson’s falls in Marysville is also a great photography location. Just follow the signs to one of the best waterfalls in Victoria. Winter is also great in and around Marysville because it can receive snow fall.

Macedon in Autumn

Macedon Photography

Getting there

The town of Macedon is a 45 minute drive up the Calder Highway from Melbourne.

It’s an easy relaxing drive making this one of the more popular photography locations around Melbourne.

Best times for photography

The best season for photography is Autumn. Just around Easter time will be the best opportunity for photography. But be warned, every other photographer in Melbourne will be up there on Easter weekend. Also, you will have busloads of tourists arriving for day trips. So you can forget about setting up your tripod in the middle of the avenue of Honor to capture that iconic shot of the Autumn leaves.

I was there 1 hour before sunrise, on a Friday, the week before Easter and I still had other photographers on the road interrupting my composition. I have heard horror stories of traffic banked up for 10 kilometres trying to enter the town.

Another tip. If you’re there for the day take your own food as there is only 1 small bakery in town and it can be super busy on a sunny day.

Pick Your Own Sunflowers Photography

Getting there

The Pick Your Own Sunflowers farm is located 90 minutes drive west of Melbourne. When taking the western freeway you will arrive just before Ballarat at the base of Mount Buninyong.

Best times for photography

The best times for photography will be when you have some sunlight streaming through the flowers. After the sunlight has passed the field will look flat and a bit lifeless. The farm may not be open during dawn and dusk times but if you reach out to the owners as I did they may grant you special access. It’s just a shame that owners chose to put a social media call out to all photographers and general sightseers on the night that I arranged special access.  This meant that it was impossible to capture a good composition without people or other photographers in the frame.

Patronas Towers Fine Art Photo

Petronas twin towers photography

Getting there

Petronas Twin Towers is in the middle of Kuala Lumpur city. It’s easily accessible by bus or train but I found a taxi from my hotel was the quickest way. Just ask the taxi driver to take you to KLCC park.

Best times for photography

The best times for photography is in the evening with the setting sun behind the towers. There are a few compositions to try. Use the leading lines of the water feature, use the walking bridge as foreground interest or shoot from the KL Tower for a different perspective. Go wide-angle or try a verticle panorama to capture the scene. Unlike most cities, I didn’t encounter any security issues when setting up a tripod in the busy shopping precinct.

Lavender

Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm

Getting there

Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm is about a 2 hour drive from Melbourne. The farm is an old Homestead built in the 1860’s.

Best times for photography

There are old bluestone buildings, rows of lavender, crab apple trees, old gates and fences, a small dam and more. I found the best shot was with the setting sun behind the farm. Morning shots with the rising sun behind the lavender rows are available when the lavender is in flower around September.
A small fee of $5 gives you access to the entire farm which in turn allows the owners to keep the gardens looking beautiful and accessible for all throughout the four seasons.

Princes Pier Photography

Getting there

Princes Pier is a 15minute drive from Melbourne city. The 109 tram from the city will also take you there.

Best times for photography

The composition looks out to the south so I find the best time for princes pier photos is in the evening with the setting sun to the right of the frame. Try to catch the last of the golden light bouncing off the pillars if you can. The composition can also look good on a foggy winters morning. A wide-angle lens or a stitched panoramic shot will be the go. Drone shots can look good in the right light but just be careful with the CASA rules as there are lots of people there on a warm night.

Get there early though as it’s one of the most photographed locations in Melbourne.

St Kilda Pier Photography

Getting there

St Kilda Pier is about a 15-minute drive from Melbourne city. Car parking in the evening can be difficult so consider taking a tram. The number 16 tram will drop you on the esplanade right in front of the pier.

Best times for photography

One of the best compositions is from the end of the breakwater rocks looking back at the cafe into the setting sun. You’ll need a wide angle lens and a sturdy tripod for this one. Do not attempt this on high tide or in strong winds.

Williamstown Photography

Golden dawn

Getting there

Williamstown is about a 15 minute drive from the Melbourne CBD. One of the best photography locations is the view of the city from the Ferguson Street Pier.

Best times for photography

The composition faces east so shooting into the morning sunrise will give you the best photographs. The above image is a panorama of 5 photos taken with a long lens. Be careful if you shoot from the end of the pier as people walking along will create movement in the pier and that will ruin any long exposure. I find the best view is from the start of the pier towards the shoreline.

Clifton Springs Photography

Getting there

The old Jetty at Clifton Springs is about a 90 minute drive from Melbourne. Navigate to the Clifton Springs Boat Ramp. Park on the side of the road at the top of the hill then walk down the access ramp to the beach. From there look to your left and you will see the jetty a short 200-meter walk away.

Best times for photography

This shot works well with either the morning sun behind you lighting up the pylons or the setting sun to the left of the frame giving colour to the sky. Break out your ND filter for this shot and you will capture some ethereal looking images.

The Balconies, Grampians f2.8, iso 1600, 1/125 sec

Getting there

The Balconies is a natural sandstone cliff lookout in the Grampians National Park in Western Victoria. The drive is about 30 minutes from Halls Gap over the top of the mountain range to the west side.

Best times for photography

The view faces the North West so the best light will be at sunset. There are 2 viewing platforms with the one closer to the balconies offering the best composition for photography.

*Bonus tip. The best composition is found just a few meters to the left of the closer viewing platform.
